Building with Habitat for Humanity in Brampton
The Zonta Club of Brampton-Caledon members supported a Brampton build with a donation of $25,000 and a day of volunteer labour. The 5-unit complex will accommodate families of 3-5 members in need of affordable housing which will be available next summer. During our day, in an off-site location, we built 12 fencing panels when our members measured, aligned, and drilled wooden panels, and carried those completed panels into a storage container, ready for delivery to the build site. A family, who will be living in one of the units, shared their story about how full-time employment, 3 children including a special needs child, and skyrocketing housing costs have not allowed them to move from a 2 bedroom basement apartment in downtown Toronto. The build was very well organized by Habitat volunteers and staff who provided much-needed cold water (27-degree summer weather), pizza lunch, and ongoing appreciation, as well as safety equipment (hard hats, vests, safety gloves) and H&S training. A great hands-on service project! We will be able to meet 'our' family when they move into their new home next year.
